POIRIER, MORIN, PELLETIER, HERNE AND FOSTER HEAD OF THE PACK AT MOHAWK
The action was fast paced this past Friday night at the Mohawk International Raceway as the Empire Super Sprints and the Seaway GM Lussier Sportsman Series highlighted the night and the good folks at Lazore's Construction were treated to a fantastic evening.
In the Empire Super Sprint 25 lap A Main Patrick Vigneault, who was making his first start in 360 Sprint Car competition this year, grabbed the lead from the pole with Dale Gosselin, Lee Ladouceur, Tommy Wickham and Jason Barney completing the top 5 early on. A torrid pace was set in the early laps as Vigneault was pulling away from the field but behind him Steve Poirier and Dylan Swernik were on the charge. Poirier made the pass for 2nd on Dale Gosselin by lap 9 and 2 laps later was all over Vigneault for the race lead. On lap 11 Poirier made the move taking over the top spot leaving Vigneault and Swernik to battle for 2nd. With 10 to go Poirier was on cruise control but Swernik had is machine working great on the top side and was trying desperately to run down race leader Steve Poirier. Without the aid of a caution flag, and the total race time being 7 minutes and 20 seconds nobody was catching Steve Poirier as he notched his 51st career Empire Super Sprint victory over Swernik, Vigneault, Matt Tanner and Dale Gosselin.
The 358 Modifieds were set to take to the speedway next and Gage Morin had been shut out of the winners circle a few times in 2015 but his outside pole position gave him the race lead over Jordan McCreadie and Tim Fuller. Morin the fastest car on the speedway as he charged out to a 7 car length lead on a track that was very quick which meant all drivers we hammer down all the way around the speedway. Just past the halfway point Morin entered into traffic bringing McCreadie and Fuller within striking distance. Behind the top 3 Brian McDonald and Billy Dunn staged a great battle for 4th and 5th but in the process they were chasing down the top 3. Morin cleared all the traffic on lap 19 and began to pull away again leaving McCreadie and Fuller to battle it out for 2nd and 3rd once again. On this night Gage Morin was not going to let anything stop him as he scored his first win of the season in a caution free event at MIR. McCreadie came home 2nd with Tim Fuller, Billy Dunn and Carey Terrance coming up for 5th at the checkered flag.
In Sportsman competition the Seaway GM Lussier Series was in town and Shane Pecore used a great move on the initial green flag to grab the lead over Corey Wheeler, Alexandre Salvas, Wyatt Mullin and Brianna Ladouceur. Pecore had a great car at the start of the 50 lap contest and Wheeler tried at will to keep pace with Pecore in the first 10 laps of the race, as behind the leaders series point leader Martin Pelletier was making a charge to the front from his 11th starting spot. By the halfway point Pelletier was making the extreme outside lane work and cracked into the top 5 for the first time by lap 30. Pecore still held a comfortable lead with just under 20 to go over Wheeler, Mullin, Pelletier and Alexandre Salvas. With the leaders entering into lapped traffic this was perfect for Pelletier who was making the extreme outside lane work as he battled with Corey Wheeler for 2nd over the next 5 laps, eventually taking the spot for good on lap 38. Pecore was pulling away through traffic and appeared to have the win all wrapped up. However the final caution flew on lap 41 setting up a great finish. When the green flew the bottom was fast and Pecore used it to his advantage but Pelletier was not about to go away quietly. Over the next 5 laps Pelletier tried repeatedly to get by and on lap 46 would accomplish that off turn 4. On the final lap the top 2 raced wheel to wheel all the way around the speedway but Martin Pelletier was not to be denied as he drove by Pecore off turn 4 to record his first ever Mohawk victory and 3rd in a row in the series. Pecore had to settle for his 5th second place finish of the year with Alexandre Salvas, Corey Wheeler and Wyatt Mullin completing the top 5.
The Mod Lite division saw some excitement as defending track champion Mathieu Robinson led the field early on over Dan Desnoyers, Nick Mallette, Kevin Foster and John Foster. Robinson looked strong leading the opening 5 laps until a multi car crash in turn 2 brought out the first yellow of the night. Nick Mallette received the most damage and had to be towed to the pits. On the restart Robinson held the top spot but Kevin Foster was on the move. after breaking into the top 5 early on Foster moved to 2nd and was pressuring Robinson for the top spot. On lap 7 Foster made the move for the lead with Robinson, Harley Brown, Jesse Hudson and Dan Desnoyers completing the top 5. On lap 13 Michael Dion flipped his machine in turn 2 bringing out the only red flag. Dion was able to climb out under his own power and walk away, his car was heavily damaged. When the green flew Kevin Foster would pull away and made it look easy as he charged to his 2nd win of the year over Mathieu Robinson, Harley Brown, Jesse Hudson, and Benjamin Cartier.
In the Novice Sportsman division Joel Herne was the class of the field during the entire 15 lap event. Herne a former Semi-Pro champion, was in search of his 2nd win of the 2015 campaign as he held a big lead by the halfway point over Styles Arquiett, Chris Frennier, Tyson Drown and Junior Delormier. Without the aid of a yellow no one was catching Herne on this night as he pulled away to grab his 2nd win of the season over Arquiett and Frennier.
Next week Keegan's Tobacco will be on hand for a full show plus the TUSA Mod Lite series. racing starts at 7:30pm.
