TIM FULLER AND SHANE PECORE DOUBLE UP ON INDEPENDENCE DAY WEEKEND AT MOHAWK
Not a cloud in the sky this past Friday night at the Mohawk International Raceway and if that wasn't good enough, how about a 50 lap Frenchie's Chevy Runs Deep 358 Modified to kick off the Independence Day weekend of racing.
The 2nd round of the Frenchie's Chevy Run's Deep 358 Modified Series was ready to go and Chris Raabe grabbed the lead from the pole over Lance Willix and Gage Morin. Both the inside and outside lanes were in great shape and Raabe had a great handling car on the bottom pulling out to nearly a full straightaway lead by lap 10 as behind the leader the battle was on in the top 5. Gage Morin and Lance Willix traded 2nd and 3rd with Willix getting the advantage by lap 13 with Tim Fuller and Billy Dunn completing the top 5. On lap 23 Fuller would move into 3rd getting by Gage Morin and would close in on Willix for 2nd, but the Theresa New York native was not going to give up the spot easily. The 2 drivers battled hard with Fuller finally getting the advantage but had a long way to catch Raabe who was running strong on this night. On lap 31 that all changed as Dale Planck and Tom Conklin made contact on the frontstretch bringing out the caution. Conklin was able to pull away, however Planck had heavy front end damage and would not return. When the green flew Raabe remained in control over Fuller, Willix, Dunn and Danny O'Brien. By lap 34 the battle was on for the lead as Fuller moved to the extreme outside lane. That move proved to be the right one as he took over the lead with Raabe, Dunn, Danny O'Brien and Lance Willix completing the top 5. Fuller looked to pull away in the closing laps but Raabe wasn't going away quietly. With 5 to go Raabe managed to make up 4 car lengths but it was all he could do as Tim Fuller claimed his first ever Frenchie's series win and 2nd of the year. Raabe once again came home 2nd over Billy Dunn, Danny O'Brien and Lance Willix.
Nolan Swamp and veteran Billy Cook led a strong field of Sportsman to the start of the 25 lap event. Swamp set the pace early on over Moise Page, Cook, Wyatt Mullin and Corey Wheeler. Swamp was using the extreme outside lane and running it perfectly through the first 5 laps until the first yellow flew for Kyle Sharp who spun in turn 3. On the restart Swamp held the lead but 2 time and defending track champion Corey Wheeler made a big move to go from 3rd to the lead with Mullin 2nd followed by Page, Shane Pecore and Swamp. Wheeler began to open up a big lead on the field by lap 12 and was looking for his 3rd win and 2nd in a row. As the race passed the halfway point Shane Pecore started to charge forward as he got by Moise Page for 3rd, then 2 laps later he would grab 2nd from Wyatt Mullin and tried to run down Corey Wheeler on lap 17. With 5 to go lapped traffic would play a part in this one as both Wheeler and Pecore liked the low lane but refused to give it up. On lap 22 entering turn 3 Pecore knew his only shot to grab the lead was on the high side, which is what he did in turn 4 taking over the top spot. On the final lap Wheeler closed in on the leader and gave it a shot on the high side of turn 4 but it wasn't enough as Shane Pecore held on to score his 2nd win of the year and first since opening day. Wyatt Mullin crossed in 3rd with Sid Harmer Jr. and Louie Jackson Jr. completing the top 5.
In Novice Sportsman action Gabriel Cyr would take over the top spot at the drop of the green flag over Madison Mulder and Miguel Peterson. Cyr, who has 2 wins in Rookie Sportsman action at Brockville, was looking to add a Mohawk checkered flag to his resume but Madison Mulder, a Brockville native was right there with him trying to spoil the party. On lap 5 after a great battle Gabriel Cyr's shot at victory went away as he broke while leading, handing the top spot to Mulder with Darryl Mitchell and Miguel Peterson completing the top 3. Over the final laps Mulder would go unchallenged, pulling away from everyone to grab his first Mohawk victory over Mitchell and Peterson.
The 15 lap Mod Lite feature saw Harley Brown jump out to the early lead and drive away from the field to lead the opening 5 laps. Brown was in search of his first ever win but last week's Derrick Ellsworth was right there with him trying to close in. On lap 9 Brown continued to lead but Ellsworth's great night was about to take a bad turn as he spun while running in 2nd, ending his shot at back to back wins. This would bring John Foster, Kevin Foster, Jesse Hudson and Mathieu Robinson into the top 5. On the restart Brown would pull away from the field and would finally bring home his first career Mod Lite victory after many runner up finishes. John Foster held off points leader Jesse Hudson for 2nd while Kevin Foster and Defending track champion Mathieu Robinson rounded out the top 5.
The 12 lap Bandit feature event was set to go with Curtis Smith and Neil Martin leading the field to green with Martin taking the early race lead. The Bandit features in 2015 have been fairly tame but on this night it got crazy, as Cory Castell got sideways in turn 1 and barrel rolled his car off the speedway. Castell would be ok but his car was done for the night. When the race resumed Dudes Thompson found some speed as he took over the race lead at the halfway point. Over the final laps John Messenger closed the gap but ran out of time as Dudes Thompson collected his 2nd win of the 2015 season. John Messenger had his best career finish of 2nd with Shane Ray coming home a solid 3rd.
Racing action resumes this coming Thursday night as the Big Block Modified Super DirtCar Series is in town for 100 laps plus the 2nd round of the Frenchie's Ford Go Further Sportsman Series and a regular show for the Mod Lites. Racing action begins at 7:30pm. For more Information log on to the speedway website at www.mohawkraceway.com.
