BRIAN "SLIM" MCDONALD DOMINATES 358 MODIFIED STARS AT MOHAWK
With hot temperatures once again this past Friday night at the Mohawk International Raceway, G&R Auto Parts and the great race fans were treated to some fantastic racing in all divisions on a track that saw many different grooves which allowed the drivers to run hard.
The 358 Modifieds were on track and ready for 30 laps on a track that was extremely fast. George Foley set the tone early on as he took the lead early over Matt Woodruff, Madison Mulder, Jordan McCreadie and John Mulder. With a track that had a great inside lane and outside lane it was all a matter of where you wanted to run. Jordan McCreadie made it a point that he was going to run the high lane as he took the lead on lap 5 and began to drive away from the field. Building up over a straightaway lead by lap 10 McCreadie began to run down lapped traffic which brought Brian McDonald into the mix having come from his 7th starting spot to position number 2 while last week's winner Billy Dunn, George Foley and Zach Aubertine completed the top 5. McDonald was able to reel in the leader as they worked the lapped cars and by lap 15 was in front and driving away from the field using the extreme outside lane. Once in front it was a dominant performance as the man they call "Slim" drove away from a quality filled field and had well over a straightaway and a half lead on the field with 5 to go with McCreadie and Dunn 2nd and 3rd while the battle was on for4th between Aubertine and 12th place starter Carey Terrance. This battle last for several laps with Terrance grabbing the position away as the laps wound down. In the end, nobody was catching Brian McDonald as the Cornwall Ontario native marched on to score his 1st win since August of 2014 at MIR with McCreadie 2nd followed by Dunn, Terrance and Zach Aubertine completing the top 5.
The Sportsman division always puts on a fantastic show and tonight was no different as Sportsman rookie Jesse Hudson jumped out to the early race lead over Troy Fleming, Robert Delormier, Side Harmer Jr., and Moise Page. The lead for Hudson however would be short lived as Delormier would take over the top spot on lap 2 bringing Harmer to 2nd with Hudson, Page and Joel Hargrave completing the top 5. Robert Delormier had been winless in his Sportsman career leading into this evening and was determined to finally get the monkey off his back as he drove to nearly a full straightaway lead by lap 13 with Harmer still holding down 2nd,Louie Jackson Jr. was on the move as well as he came from 9th on the grid to complete the top 3. As the laps clicked off the next obstacle for Delormier was lapped traffic and it never phased him as he carefully picked his way through the traffic and continued to put more distance between himself and Sid Harmer Jr., who was looking for a good run for his sponsor G&R Auto Parts, who also was the nights title sponsor. In the end however, the wait was over for Robert Delormier as he finally scored his first career Sportsman win after many years of trying. Sid Harmer Jr. crossed in 2nd while Louie Jackson Jr., Joel Hargrave and Moise Page rounded out the top 5.
In Mod Lite action Kevin Foster set the pace early in the 15 lap event with Dan Reif and the winner from 2 weeks ago Harley Brown giving chase. Foster held a comfortable lead but Deric Ellsworth was also on the move and looking to break into the top 3.He would do just that getting by Dan Reif for 3rd and set his sights on race leader Harley Brown, and the chase was on as the laps clicked off Harley Brown seemed untouchable, but a late caution slowed his pace setting up the final restart. When the green flew again Harley Brown was able to pull away with no issues to score his 2nd win of the 2016 campaign over Deric Ellsworth, Scott Waldrif, Kevin Foster and Dan Reif.
The Novice Sportsman were ready for battle in the 15 lap affair with Dana Francis setting a comfortable pace in the early going over Styles Arquiett and Anthony Rassmussen. With a fast race track Rassmussen took full advantage as he took over the lead on lap 6 and began to put on a dominant performance bringing Styles Arqueitt to 2nd. Rassmussen put the car on auto pilot over the final 6 laps and scored his 3rd win of the year over Styles Arquiett, who's bid for 3 in a row came up short with a 2nd place effort while Greg Snyder crossed in 3rd.
In the Bandit division Richard Thorton was looking to pad his points lead and possibly get his 4th win of the season as he set the pace early in the 10 lap event. Thorton held the lead until lap 5 when Corbin Millar took over the top spot with Gary Sharlow now making up the top 3 spots. Only 1 yellow slowed the race for Lucas Brown who spun in turn 2. On the restart Millar pulled away for his 2nd win in as many starts at Mohawk in the Bandit class. Richard Thorton would battle Gary Sharlow and finally get the runner up spot away at the checkered flag with Sharlow settling for 3rd.
At the end of the night a special Ironman Enduro Qualifier took place as 14 cars took the green flag with the winner receiving a guaranteed spot into the Ironman Slick Track Enduro on September 24th. Dillon Cole took the lead early on and was never challenged the entire way leading all 12 laps to score the win and the guaranteed spot.
Next week a big night for the 358 Modifieds as they get set for round 3 of the Bailey Motor Company 358 Modified series along with a full show in all classes and a gigantic fireworks display. The racing action begins at 7:30pm.
